Lower school students celebrate Fine Arts Day

On Friday, May 17, lower school students celebrated Fine Arts Day, a day set aside to celebrate the elements of art, which form the foundation of creativity.
In visual arts, lower school students learn about these seven elements of art:
  • Lines.
  • Shapes.
  • Forms.
  • Space.
  • Value.
  • Texture.
  • Color.
“All artists have access to these concepts when creating their art,” explains Elizabeth Ables, lower school art teacher.

Activities at Lower School Fine Arts Day encouraged students in each grade level to explore how all the elements come together to make a masterpiece.

Kindergarten through second grade students created line and pattern gardens using sharpies and creating black and white flowers on a colorful background. Kindergarten through first grade students also created a color-wheel lion. They began by drawing the lion, adding texture to fur, and coloring in the color wheel, blending the three primary colors to create the three secondary colors.

Third grade students created a collaborative relief sculpture inspired by Charles McGee’s black and white relief sculptures. Second through fourth grade students created radial design citrus fruits by creating tints and using complementary color. Third and fourth grade students created zentangle tiles by using black and white lines and patterns.

“The elements of art are the foundation on which the elements of art are created. Similarly, Jesus is the rock and the firm foundation upon which we should build our lives,” reflects Ables.

Students also participated in a talent show during Fine Arts Day. Lower school students performed piano solos, guitar (and keytar) solos, vocal solos, and dance routines.

"Auditioning for the talent show is a valuable learning experience that can teach you many life lessons such as the importance of hard work, resilience, and self-confidence,” shares Lisa McNearney, music teacher.

Well done, lower school students, and thank you for expressing and sharing your creativity and artistic abilities!
